Crowns function by helping to add strength and durability to the structure of the tooth. Tooth decay, cavities and fillings, age, improper bite and tooth cracking are all reasons that the dentist may suggest you get a crown. When placed, the crown will cover the surface of your tooth, restoring stability and helping to keep your tooth “safe” from future wear and tear.
The crown process involves several steps. First, Dr. Kenworthy will make an impression of the tooth and have it sent to a dental laboratory that will manufacture a crown to fit your unique tooth shape and size. Sometimes additional steps must be taken at this point to restore the integrity of the remaining tooth, but a filling will usually be placed to ensure the tooth structure is stable prior to sending you home.
While waiting for the permanent crown to be made, a temporary crown will be placed over your tooth to protect it and allow you to resume normal activity. Once the permanent crown is received by our office, it will be cemented in place and your tooth’s structure restored!
Veneers are sometimes an alternative to crowns when tooth structure is becoming compromised, or they are placed for cosmetic reasons. These veneers are porcelain or plastic pieces that are very thin and are made to fit your personalized smile plan, then glued over your existing tooth structure. Usually little or no anesthesia is required and the veneers drastically improve teeth that might be discolored, chipped, or otherwise compromised.
