Dental Exam
So, what should you expect the first time you visit our office? We always conduct a thorough exam with new patients in order to evaluate existing conditions and overall oral health, as well as discuss a game plan for your future care.
Dr. Kenworthy will physically examine your face and neck to see if there are any abnormalities or areas of concern, such as lumps, bumps and/or swelling. She will then check inside your mouth, again looking for any abnormalities throughout your lips, gums, tongue, palate and cheeks. Checking your bite and jaw are also part of this. Signs of gingivitis, periodontal disease and/or bone problems are noted, and finally, the doctor will also conduct the examination of your teeth. Cavities and other signs of decay are important as are any areas that you may have expressed concern about because you are feeling pain, swelling, etc.
X-rays are also taken during a full exam and we use the most up-to-date in office x-ray technology. The importance of x-rays in order to check for underlying problems or causes of symptoms should not be underestimated. This is the only way for us to determine diagnoses such as bone loss or severity of periodontal (gum) disease. Lastly, these x-rays will also serve as a starting point or “baseline” moving forward.
